McGill soccer duo merit national honours at U SPORTS All-Canadian awards gala

QUEBEC CITY -- Mara Bouchard and Chloe Renaud, both members of the McGill University women's soccer team, received national honours at the U SPORTS All-Canadian banquet held at the Hôtel Le Concorde in Quebec City, Wednesday.

Bouchard earned second-team All-Canadian honours, while Renaud merited national all-rookie status.

Bouchard, a 21-year-old psychology sophomore from Granby, Que., becomes the 451st McGillian to earn All-Canadian honours and the 54th member of the soccer Martlets to do so, the first since Kelsey Wilson in 2013.

Bouchard merited RSEQ first-team all-conference honours for the second consecutive season. The 5-foot-4 defensive midfielder started all 14 games and had no points. She was selected four times in 15 contests by opposing coaches as McGill's player of the game. Bouchard was the league's rookie of the year last season, earning all-rookie honours at both the league and U SPORTS levels.

Renaud is a 19-year-old psychology freshman from St. Hubert, Que. The 5-foot-4 midfielder scored two goals and added a pair of assists to finish tied for second among the team's points leaders. She played in 13 of the team's 14 regular season contests and was picked four times by opposing coaches as McGill's player of the game.

Among the other national award recipients announced during the gala was the U SPORTS player of the year which went to the University of Ottawa's Cassandra Provost, a sophomore forward from Acton Vale, Que.  Rounding out the laureates was Laval midfielder Léa-Jeanne Fortier (rookie of the year), Memorial midfielder Katie Hickey (Student-Athlete Community Service Award), and Laval bench boss David Desloges (Fox40 coach of the year).

The all-Canadian teams included Provost, Sauvé, Steer, Rowe and Fortier on the first team, along with goalkeeper Sarah Johns (UBC), defender Tilly James (Trinity Western), midfielders Grace Longley (Acadia), Jotam Chouhan (York), Megan Chiasson (Dalhousie) and forward Grace Mwasalla (MacEwan).

Sauvé is a four-time honoree (2018, 2019, 2021), while Steer and Rowe each pick up their second nod. Chiasson was a member of the 2021 all-rookie team.

Joining McGill's Bouchard on the second squad was Laval goalkeeper Myriam Labrecque; defenders Lauren Jodry (Acadia), Anneke Odinga (MacEwan), Emma Steen (STFX) and Avarie Thomas (Western); midfielders Tori Chia (Queen's) and Anyssa Ibrahim (UQAM); along with forwards Rachel Barlow (Calgary), Amanda Smith (StFX) and Karly Hellstrom (Toronto).

Smith is a three-time honoree, while this is the second nod for Jodry, and Bouchard was a member of the 2021 all-rookie team.

In addition to Renaud, Fortier, Hannaford, Crowther and Fleming-Thompson, the all-rookie team consists of defender Kiann Bohnert (MacEwan); midfielders Léonie Portelance (Montréal),  Seema Sakran (Queen's) and Ella Sunde (UBC); along with forwards Olivia Allen (Ottawa), Abbey Aucoin (Acadia) and Elise Evans (Dalhousie).

The 2022 U SPORTS championship gets underway Thursday at Laval's Stade TELUS and culminates Sunday with the national championship game at 2 p.m. Eastern. All 11 games from the eight-team tournament will be webcast live on CBC Gem and cbcsports.ca in English and USPORTS.ca in French.
