KAMLOOPS, B.C. –
Ludovyck Ciociola from the McGill University men's soccer team, was named to the U SPORTS all-rookie team at the All-Canadian banquet held in Kamloops, B.C., late Wednesday night.
A 5-foot-11, 170-pound goalkeeper from Montreal, Ciociola started in nine of McGill's 12 games this season. The 21-year-old management freshman posted a 1-4-2 record with a pair of shutouts and a 1.76 goals-against average and a .768 save percentage. In 664 minutes played, he registered 43 saves on 56 shots.
Ciociola was named as the McGill and Quebec university male athlete of the week on Oct. 19 which led to him being selected as the U SPORTS soccer player of the week. A product of College
Ahuntsic, he plays during the summer for AS
Blainville of the Quebec provincial soccer League (
PLSQ).
Among the major award recipients was
Christopher Campoli, a third-year midfielder from Ontario Tech University, who was named the U SPORTS player of the year. UBC defender
Eric Lajeunesse received the Lou
Bilek Award as rookie of the year, Nipissing's
Deven Doodnath won the Student-Athlete Community Service Award and
UNBC bench boss
Steve Simonson was presented with the Fox40 coach of the year honours.
The all-Canadian teams were also announced. Joining

Sterling Kerr (Mount Royal), defenders
Jacob Begley (Ontario Tech),
Lewis Dye (
STFX),
Guillaume Pianelli Balisoni (
UQTR) and
Caden Rogozinski (Mount Royal), along with midfielders
Thomas Gardner (UBC) and
Soji Olatoye (York).
Rogozinski and
Olatoye both won their second straight all-Canadian nods, while Gardner returns to the dream team for the first time since 2018.
On the second team is goalkeeper
Taylor Miskolczi (Brock), defenders
Kareem Sow (
Montréal) and
Jamie Watson (Cape Breton), midfielders
Heikel Jarras (Laval),
Jack Sears (Guelph) and
Gabriel Wiethaeuper-Balbinotti (
UQTR), along with forwards
Thierry Côté (
Montréal),
Mohamed El Gandour (Mount Royal),
Sean Freeman (Saint Mary's) and
Victory Shumbusho (UBC).
El Gandour (2019, 2021) and
Shumbusho (2017, 2019) are both three-time all-Canadians, while Sow and
Jarras are repeat winners from last year. Freeman was on last year's all-rookie team.

The 2022 U SPORTS championship gets underway Thursday at Thompson Rivers University's Hillside Stadium and culminates Sunday with the national championship game at 2 p.m. Pacific Time. All 11 games from the eight-team tournament will be webcast live on CBC YouTube Channel, with select games on Gem and cbcsports.ca in English, and all games in French at USPORTS.ca.
