NORTH BAY, ONT –
John Miraglia tallied four points and
Alexander Erbstein registered a hat-trick while leading McGill to a 15-3 victory over the Nipissing Lakers in a Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association game, Sunday.
It was McGill's highest offensive output since a 20-4 conquest over Carleton at Molson Stadium on Oct. 22, 2019 and the team's most goals in a road game since an 18-2 win at Carleton on Sept. 16, 2018.
The result improved McGill's record to 5-2 and maintained their tug-of-war share of second place with Bishop's (5-2) in the CUFLA East. The Redbids are six points behind division-leading Trent (8-1) with two games in hand to play before the key season finale in Peterborough..
Against Nipissing, the visitors conceded a goal just 13 seconds after the opening faceoff but roared back with nine consecutive markers before the Lakers could respond again.McGill led 4-1 after the opening quarter and 11-2 at halftime before making a plethora of substitutions. They won the third quarter 2-1 and the final stanza 2-0.
Miraglia, an arts freshman from Memphis, Tenn., scored twice, including the game-winner, and added a pair of helpers. Erbstein, a geography sophomore from Gulf Stream, Fla., struck for a pair in the second quarter and completed his hat-trick early in the third.
Also striking twice for the Redbirds was
Owen Howard and
Isaiah Cree. Rounding out the scoring, with one apiece, was
Ethan Forgrave,
Luke Dawick,
Alexander Cowgill,
Massimo Thauvette,
Rowan Birrell and
Cameron McGinnis.
Marksmen for the Lakers were
Will Ferguson,
Stephan Hass and
Carter Tait.
Goaltender
Joseph Boehm, a senior from Waterloo, Ont., played the first half for McGill, saved two of four shots and was credited with the win. He was replaced by senior
Steven Pelliccione, who saved three of four shots in 15 minutes of work. Freshman
Henry Komosa played the final quarter and turned aside all three shots faced.
Josh LaPorte started for Nipissing and took the loss. He was beaten 11 times before being relieved after the third quarter by
Christian Rasmussen, who allowed four over the final 15 minutes.
McGill will make up their two games in hand over division-leading Trent when the Redbirds host Bishop's on Oct. 19 and travel to Queen's on Oct. 22. Should McGill sweep those two, the CUFLA East pennant will be decided in the season finale at Trent on Oct. 23.
