MONTREAL –
Simon Lafrance and
Felix Lafrance, a brother act from St. Eustache, Que., each scored as the defending national champion UQTR Patriotes skated to a 5-1 triumph over McGill in a men's hockey exhibition game at McConnell Arena, Friday.
The result avenged McGill's 3-2 victory at Trois-Rivieres in the preseason opener on Sept. 16.
The Patriotes, who had a 41-23 edge in shots, won all three periods. They led 1-0 after one and 3-0 after two, then took the final stanza 2-1.
McGill's lone goal was by
Jordan-Ty Fournier, a senior from Dorval, Que., who broke goaltender
Alexis Gravel's bid for a shutout on a power-play at 3:09 of the final stanza, narrowing the gap to 3-1. But 49 seconds later,
Simon Lafrance replied to restore the three-goal cushion.
Gravel made 22 saves for the victory, while McGill starter
Emanuel Vella registered 36 saves in a losing cause.
Other marksmen for the visitors were sophomore
Louis-Filip Cote, freshman
Ludovic Soucy and senior
Zachary Lavigne.
The Redbirds went 1-for-5 on the power-play, while UQTR was 0-for-5.
McGill, which fell to 2-2 overall, will conclude their preseason schedule against the NCAA's Dartmouth College. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday (Oct. 8) but has been rescheduled to Oct. 12 in Hanover, N.H.
The Patriotes concluded their preseason schedule at 3-1 and will host Queen's on Oct. 14, in their OUA opener.
