PETERBOROUGH, ONT -- Four players registered hat-tricks, two of them for McGill, as the Trent University Excalibur rallied to outlast the Redbirds 12-11 in a wild men's lacrosse season finale, at Justin Chiu Stadium, Sunday.
McGill led 5-3 after the opening quarter and 8-7 at halftime, but Trent roared back to grab an 11-9 lead after three stanzas. The Redbirds won the final quarter 2-1.
The result clinched first place in the CUFLA East Division for Trent, which finished first of seven teams with a 9-1 record, four points ahead of fourth-place McGill (6-4). The Excalibur will now receive a first-round post-season bye, while McGill must travel to Kingston on Oct. 28 for a sudden-death playoff game, with the winner advancing to the league's Baggataway Cup championship tournament in Peterborough, Nov. 4-6.
Trent's
Taite Cattoni of Calgary led all scorers with five points, four of them assists. Teammates
Cole Hanrahan of Bracebridge, Ont., and
Curtis Conley of Ottawa each scored three times.
Leading McGill, with three goals apiece, was
Cameron McGuinnis of Scarborough, Ont., and
Alex Erbstein, a freshman import from Gulf Stream, Fla.
Despite allowing 11 goals, Toronto native
Jackson Brown earned the victory between the pipes for Trent.
McGill goaltender
Joseph Boehm, a senior from Waterloo, Ont., started between the pipes and he saved five of 15 shots while playing 40 minutes. He was replaced at the 14-minute mark of the third quarter by senior
Steven Pellicione who conceded two goals on two shots and took the loss. Boehm went back in for the final 80 seconds.
