MONTREAL -- A header by
Casey Koscher in the 90th minute of play, converted an indirect free kick from the 21-yard sideline as Concordia shoplifted a 1-0 victory over McGill in women's soccer at Percival Molson Stadium, Thursday.
The stunning result moved Concordia into a third-place tie with McGill as both teams have an identical 5-5-3 record and one game remaining before playoffs. The teams split their two-game series, with McGill winning the first meeting 2-1 at Concordia last month.
It snapped McGill's 4-0-1 undefeated streak against the Stingers and was Concordia's fourth shutout of the season and their first over McGill since a 3-0 decision on Sept. 23, 2018.
McGill had a 10-6 edge in shots on net but was unable to solve goalkeeper
Bianca Stevens-Cardin, who earned the shutout. McGill 'keeper
Sophie Guilmette made five saves and took the loss.
There was only one yellow card issued in the contest and it went to McGill assistant coach
Patrick Viollat for arguing a call.
It was the final regular season home game for three graduating seniors, who were honoured in a pre-game ceremony. They included fifth-year striker
Giovanna Tiberio (BA psychology) of Montreal, defender
Ariel Carignan (BA sociology) of Sherbrooke, Que., and Calgary native
Hannah Park, a first-year transfer from Mount Royal University, who is working on a master's degree in bioengineering.
Both teams will close out the league schedule on Sunday (Oct. 23), with McGill at eighth-place Sherbrooke (0-8-4) and Concordia hosting second-place Montreal (10-2-0).
