Soccer Martlets silence Sherbrooke to finish third, will meet Laval in semifinal

SHERBROOKE -- Montrealer Sophie Guilmette posted a four-save shutout as visiting McGill blanked eighth-place Sherbrooke 2-0, Sunday, to clinch third place in the final RSEQ women's soccer game of the regular season.

The result was McGill's 10th consecutive victory over Sherbrooke since a 1-0 setback on Oct. 16, 2016.

It marked the fifth clean sheet in 13 contests for Guilmette, a 5-foot-6 transfer from Vanderbilt University, who improved her record in a McGill uniform to 5-5-3 with a 1.08 goals-against average.

Detailed statistics were not available but McGill markers came from Chloe Renaud and Elisabeth Pronovost.

The game featured five yellow cards, including three to Sherbrooke and one to McGill bench boss Jose-Luis Valdes.

The Martlets posted a 6-5-3 record to finish one point ahead of fourth-place UQAM (5-4-5). McGill advances to confront second-place Laval (10-1-3) in a sudden-death semifinal at Quebec City on Friday, Oct. 28. The other semi has UQAM confronting the division-leading Montreal Carabins (12-2-0).
