SOCCER (w): No. 3 ranked Carabins squeak past Martlets to remain atop standings

Box Score
MONTREAL – Midfielder Santy Malanda scored the game-winner in the 17th minute of play as the division-leading and No. 3 ranked Université de Montréal Carabins blanked McGill 1-0 in women's university soccer at Stade CEPSUM, Thursday.

It was the second clean sheet of the young season for U de M, which improved to 4-0 atop the RSEQ standings. The Carabins have now outscored their opponents 9-2 in four games. The result marked the third time in four outings that McGill was kept off the scoreboard.

The Martlets had a good chance to score the equalizer in the final minute of play but striker Ariel Carignan's free kick from about 15 yards inside the sideline was saved goalkeeper Catherine Langelier, who then deflected it off the crossbar.

The Carabins had 7-1 margin in corner kicks and an 8-5 edge in shots on net as Langelier, a junior from St. Eustache, Que., made five saves for the shutout. McGill keeper Brenna Bordeniuk, a freshman from Calgary, kicked aside seven of eight, many of them spectacular, in a losing cause.

"She kept us in the game and that helped us to push and fight to the end," said McGill head coach Jose-Luis Valdes. "We started off very poor in the first 25 minutes. We played into their style. They like turnovers and long balls and that's just what we did. The second half was much better. We actually had possession for a good amounts of time and were able to combine passes and move forward. We didn't stop pushing and it was good to see that character from our young group."

Carabins midfielder Karine Lafontaine was the only player penalized in the contest, drawing a yellow card in the 36th minute.

The third-place Martlets, who dropped to 1-2-1, will now turn their focus towards playing at Bishop's (1-2-0) on Sunday (Sept. 26) in a 4 p.m. start at Coulter Field in Lennoxville, Que. On the same day, Montreal (4-0) will put their unblemished mark on the line at UQTR.
