SHIFTING FOCUS: Spotlight on Redbirds soccer head coach Marc Mounicot

The Shifting Focus Series is brought to you by Redbird Sports Shop

How you know him: Marc Mounicot was appointed head coach of the Redbirds soccer team in 2013 after 15 seasons as head coach of the Martlets. He was inducted into the McGill Sports Hall of Fame in 2011, among his many accomplishments he captained the men's soccer team to a CIS national championship in his last game in 1997. A few months later, he was appointed as the head coach at McGill of the women's team. Mounicot was voted Quebec conference coach of the year four times and CIS coach of the year in 2009, he led the Martlets to eight Quebec titles and four medals in eight appearances at the CIS national championships, winning two silvers and a pair of bronzes.

What has been your best moment during your coaching career?

There are two things that stand out - the first being the U SPORTS (University Sports, then CIS) national championship in 2004, it was a great game and we wound up losing in penalty kicks. The second is the opportunities I've had to coach Team Canada, once in Beijing, once in Turkey and once in Thailand. Those are experiences I'll never forget.

Prior to becoming a coach, what was your best sports memory?

Definitely my years playing in Europe, I had the opportunity to play for three separate organizations, playing on numerous championship teams. It was a great experience for me as a player. I also represented France at the National University Program and the University games.

If you could have any professional sports coaching position, which job and team would you choose?

I'd have to go with either Arsenal or the French national team. Arsenal because I've been a fan for 30 years, Arsene Wenger (manager from 1996 to 2018) had a philosophy that I really enjoyed, his vision and creativity for the game was something special.

Who was your favourite pro-athlete growing up?

Johan Cruyff was my favourite player growing up, he was a dutch player. Cruyff was one of those players for whom football (soccer in Canada) was an art, he was like a ballet dancer out there, and was very fun to watch.

What are you most looking forward to as things begin to re-open in the coming months?

I'm just looking forward to having a very good season with our men's program, putting all the work in necessary to have some success.
