BASKETBALL (w): Quick start fades for Martlets in loss to Bishop’s

MONTREAL – Victoria Gauna posted a dominating double-double as Bishop's defeated McGill 80-47 in women's basketball on Saturday afternoon at Love Competition Hall.

McGill scored the first eight points of the game and took an early 10-2 lead midway through the opening quarter, but the visitors quickly regained control. The score was knotted at 14-14 after the first stanza, then Bishop's outscored the Red and White 21-6 in the second, 25-14 in the third and 20-13 in the final stanza.

The Gaiters improved to 2-1, while McGill dropped to 0-3.

Guana, a six-foot-one native of Argentina, was particularly dominant in the post, scoring a game-high 28 points and pulling down a dozen rebounds. McGill did not have an answer for the bruising centre down low. Teammate Jennifer Louis contributed 14 points and the combination of Guana and Louis carried the lion's share of the offensive weight for Bishop's, shooting a combined 17-for-27.

Pacing McGill was Iman Ibrahim of Montreal with 12 points, and Amelie Rochon of Levis, Que., who added 10.  Each of them shot 4-for-10 from the floor, with Ibrahim hitting a couple of threes and Rochon collecting a pair of steals and a block.

"It was positive for us early on, we went zone on defence and caught them a little off-guard," said head coach Rikki Bowles. "Ibrahim got a few buckets quickly, we really competed hard in the first quarter. We're trying to highlight the positives. Now it's about carrying that level of play throughout the game."

Ball movement was another difference-maker, as the visitors tallied 22 assists versus just eight for the home side. Improvements figure to come slowly as the Martlets get more comfortable playing with one another, with such a young program and new faces getting used to one another's tendencies.

In total, eight members of the Martlets found the score sheet, including Charlotte Guerin of Lyon, France who scored a solid eight points and grabbed five boards.

"We're now three games into the season and tracking those things to improve on," noted Bowles. "Tonight for the first time, we got to the (foul) line more than 10 times. We have struggled from the field, so we focused on getting the ball to Amelie in the paint and she has had a couple of nice games for us. Whether it's Charlotte, Katie (Rathwell) or Emma-Jane (Scotten), our young players are showing improvement as they get acclimated to this level."

McGill will look to bounce back in their next game, on Nov. 26 when they pay a visit to Quebec City for their first of four meetings this season with Laval (2-1).
