BASKETBALL (w): Martlets fall to Laval in final test of semester

QUEBEC CITY – Kim Letang scored a game-high 20 points as the Laval Rouge et Or defeated visiting McGill 76-34 in women's basketball to close the fall semester at the Centre PEPS, Friday.

The home side pounced on McGill (0-4) early and didn't let up, leading 24-7 after ten minutes, 42-14 at the half and 57-25 after three quarters. Laval, which improved to 3-1 and shares first place with Bishop's, connected nine times from three-point range, while limiting the Martlets to single digit scoring in three of the four quarters.

A swarming defence held the visitors shooting to just 22.4 per cent from the floor and 16.7 per cent from downtown. Laval also showed off a deep bench, going to it early and ofte, outscoring McGill's bench 32-12.

Letang paced a balanced attack, shooting a red-hot 5-for-6 from beyond the arc. Teammates Rachel Clouatre-Trudeau and Frederique Beaudry-Blais both finished in double figures as well, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively. Clouatre-Trudeau was 5-for-11 from the floor.

In total, all 12 members of the Rouge et Or found the back of the net and they held a lopsided 50-31 advantage on the boards.

The lone bright spot for McGill was Amelie Rochon of Levis, Que., who scored in double figures for a third consecutive game and continues to look more comfortable as the Martlets low-post foundation. The third-year medical student had 12 points, on 6-for-11 shooting from the floor. She added six rebounds in 24 minutes of court time.

Forward Maddy Colpitts of Fredericton, N.B., contributed seven points. Rookie point guard Iman Ibrahim of Montreal had three points, three rebounds, three  assists and a pair of steals. Emma-Jane Scotten, a freshman from Ottawa, scored three points with a  3-for-4 effort from the line.

Rounding out the scoring for McGill was Charlotte Guerin (4 pts), Joy Taan-Tobias (3) and Kristy Awikeh (2).

McGill will now have a six-week break in their schedule for exams and holidays before returning to the court on Jan. 6 when they head across the downtown core to confront UQAM (1-2).
