MONTREAL –
Phelix Martineau of Terrebonne, Que., scored once and set up two others as visiting Concordia turned the tables on McGill with a 5-2 victory in men's university hockey at McConnell Arena, Friday.
The resulted avenged McGill's 3-2 overtime shootout victory at Concordia in the season opener on Nov. 3. The longtime rivals also split a pair of preseason encounters, with both again winning on each other's ice.
It was the fourth consecutive loss in OUA play for the Redbirds (1-4), who had a 36-31 edge in shots. Concordia, which improved their record to 3-1-1, led 2-1 after the first period and 2-1 after two. The Stingers then outscored McGill 2-0 down the stretch.
"We got out-battled in the third period tonight," said McGill head coach
David Urquhart in a stern voice. "That's not acceptable and we need to be better."
In a game that featured 17 penalties, all of them minors, the Redbirds went 1-for-7 on the power-play and Concordia registered a 2-for-5 performance. Seven different McGill players were penalized, compared to only five who figured in the scoring.
Other Concordia marksmen included defenceman
Nathan Lavoie, along with forwards
Isiah Campbell,
Charles Tremblay and
Gabriel Proulx.
Scoring for McGill was defenceman
Jacob Golden, who tied the game at 1-1 and centre
Eric Uba, who knotted the score at 2-2. It was the first career goal at the university level for Golden, a management sophomore from Toronto who was playing in just his third game after a junior career in the OHL with the Erie Otters and London Knights.
Uba, a finance freshman from Kitchener, Ont., leads the team in goals with eight in 11 games overall, including three in five regular season contests.
Freshman forward
Brandon Frattaroli of Pierrefonds, Que., assisted on both McGill goals, in his first regular season game with the Redbirds.
Concordia goaltender
Thomas Sigouin of Amos, Que., turned aside 34 of 36 shots for the victory and improved to 3-2 on the season. McGill freshman
Alexis Shank of Laval, Que., saved 26 of 31 shots and took the loss as his record dropped to 1-3.
McGill leads the all-time head-to-head series with a 110-107-14 record over Concordia. And the inter-city war resumes on Sunday (Nov. 21) when the bitter enemies meet again, this time in a 3 p.m. duel at the Ed Meagher Arena.
