HOCKEY (m) Stingers double Redbirds in penalty-filled affair

MONTREAL – Alexandre Katerinakis scored twice, including the game-winner as Concordia doubled McGill 4-2 in a penalty-filled men's hockey game at the Ed Meagher Arena, Sunday.

The showdown provided a good opportunity to work on special teams as the bitter cross-town rivals combined for 78 penalty minutes on 32 infractions (18 by McGill). Concordia went 2-for 8 on the power-play and tallied a shorthanded marker. The Redbirds went 1-for-7 and also added a shorty of their own.

McGill freshman forward Brandon Frattaroli opening the scoring midway through the first period with his second career marker, his first in regular season play.

But the Stingers rattled off four consecutive goals, with Gabriel Proulx and Marcus Tesink connecting at 14:05 and 18:08, respectively, to finish the period with a 2-1 lead. With Concordia on a full-fledged 5-on-3 power-play, Katerinakis made it 3-0 at 1:15 of the second period, followed just 29 seconds later by his second marker.

That fourth goal resulted in an early exit for McGill starter Emanuel Vella, who took the loss, conceding four goals on 18 shots. He was replaced by Alexis Shank, who played the final 36 minutes and saved all 18 shots faced, including a penalty shot by Phelix Martineau.

The final goal was a shorthanded effort  by McGill junior Phil Gilmour at 18:13 of the final stanza.

Goaltender Thomas Sigouin collected the win with 26 saves for Concordia, which had a 36-28 edge in shots.

McGill (1-5-0) will have days to regroup before resuming their OUA schedule with a back-to-back games against Ottawa (3-2-1), at McConnell Arena on Friday, Nov. 26 (7 p.m.) and the Minto Sports Complex on Nov. 28 (3 p.m.). The Stingers, who took over the OUA Far East division lead with a 4-1-1 record, are off until hosting UQTR (3-1-0) on Dec. 1.

McGill's overall record against Concordia dropped to 110-108-14 lifetime and the teams will clash again in the annual Ronald Corey Cup rivalry game on Dec. 7 in a 7 p.m. duel at the Ed Meagher Arena.
