BASKETBALL (w): Martlets drop first road test to UQAM, despite career-best night from Rochon

MONTREAL – Amelie Rochon of Lévis, Que., scored a career-high 16 points but it was insufficient as the McGill women's basketball team fell 79-38 to UQAM at the Centre Sportif, on Thursday.

The Citadins were strong from the start, leading 23-7 after 10 minutes and extending the lead to 39-11 at the half. McGill rebounded somewhat in the second half, losing the third quarter 20-12 and the final stanza 20-15.

Leading a balanced offensive attack for the Citadins was Veronique Boivin with 18 points, followed by Alexe Dufresne (16), Fredlyne Verrier (11) and Delphine St-Cyr (10). The foursome hit a combined nine treys.

Rochon, a third-year medical student, was a force down low for McGill. The 6-foot-3 forward shot 8-for-13 from the floor, and pulled down six boards off the glass. She added a pair of steals and one blocked shot. Rochon has made the most of a big uptick in minutes this season. She's averaging 17.4 points per 40 minutes and shooting over 50 per cent from the floor, which ranks 23rd in the country.

McGill point-guard Iman Ibrahim, a speedy, arts freshman from Montreal, contributed six points, five rebounds and three assists in her second taste of regular-season action.

Also finding the scoresheet for McGill was Charlotte Guerin and Katie Rathwell, with four points apiece, plus Emma-Jane Scotten (3), Jessica Salanon (2) and Trishia Villedrouin (1).

The Martlets struggled from the field, shooting just 29.3 per cent from the floor and going 0-for-15 beyond the arc.

The Citadins (1-1) did an excellent job controlling the glass, out-rebounding McGill 45-27, including a plus-12 advantage under the offensive boards. In total, five different UQAM women had at least five boards, paced by 10 from Paule Beline-Ibata.

Next up, McGill (0-2) plays host to Bishop's (1-1) on Saturday, Nov. 20. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Love Competition Hall, followed by the men's game at 6 p.m.
