McGill soccer duo earns U SPORTS all-rookie honours

CAPE BRETON, N.S. – Two members of the McGill University women's soccer team were among the laureates announced Wednesday night, as the national award winners were celebrated at the annual U SPORTS All-Canadian gala.

Mara Bouchard of Granby, Que., and Stephanie Hill of Montreal, were both named to the U SPORTS all-rookie team, in voting conducted by the women's soccer coaching association.

Bouchard, a 5-foot-4 all-star midfielder, was named last week the RSEQ conference rookie of the year. She started in all 14 league games and led the team in minutes played, missing only 80 minutes over the season. The 20-year-old psychology freshman was named as player of the game six times by the opposing coach. Held pointless, she was assigned the role of being a shutdown midfielder, which helped McGill achieve the second-best defensive record in the league.

Hill, a 5-foot-10 all-star centre-back, started in 13 games and was named as McGill's player of the game four times. A 19-year-old science sophomore majoring in physical therapy, she was held pointless but played a key shutdown role, helping limit opposing teams to just 10 goals during the season.

Among the major award recipients announced at the gala was Calgary midfielder Montana Leonard, who received the Chantal Navert Memorial Award as player of the year. Guelph midfielder Cloey Uddenberg was named rookie of the year, while Bishop's defender Kayla Kyle earned the Student-Athlete Community Service Award for outstanding contribution both on and off the playing field. Finally, Trinity Western bench boss Graham Roxburgh was named as the Fox 40 coach of the year.
