SOCCER (w): Lucky Liliane Lefebvre looms large as Martlets clinch playoff berth

SHERBROOKE – Striker Liliane Lefebvre of Toronto scored the game-winner early on and goalkeeper Brenna Bordeniuk of Calgary was credited with a seven-save shutout as the McGill women's soccer team waltzed to a 2-0 victory at Sherbrooke, Friday.

The result clinched a fourth consecutive playoff berth for McGill, which improved to 6-4-3 and now sits comfortably in fourth, seven points ahead of Bishop's, which dropped to 4-7-2 after a 1-0 setback at Concordia (2-9-2).

Lefebvre put McGill ahead in the 18th minute of play, converting a long pass from forward Alexia Remillard, a junior from Repentigny, Que. Lefebvre went shoulder-to shoulder with her defender, faked one way and moved the other to beat her in a running battle. Sara-Maude Bernard, the Vert & Or goalkeeper, came out to cut down the angle but Lefebvre pushed it past the keeper, caught up to the ball and kicked it in the vacated net. Bernard was credited with 11 saves in a losing cause.

In the second half, the Martlets added an insurance marker in the 63rd minute on an own goal. McGill's Ariel Carignan, a third-year centre-back from Sherbrooke, rifled a corner kick into the box. One of the Vert & Or defenders tried to intercept the ball and deflected it high into her own net.

There was one yellow card issued in the game, assessed to Sherbrooke's Alyssia Guarneri. The sixth-place Vert & Or dropped to 3-10-0 and will close out their campaign against visiting Concordia on Sunday.

The Martlets have one game remaining and could still catch third-place UQAM (7-4-2). They will host the Gaiters in a 3 p.m. matinee on Sunday at Percival Molson Stadium. It will mark the final home game for at least four graduating McGill seniors, namely Ariane Ducharme, Victoria Sturgess, Noemie Briollais and Ruqayya Hirji. Three other seniors – Giovanna Tiberio, Alexia Remillard and Thalia Krauth-Ibarz – are also graduating but expected to return.
