Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Earl Zukerman

HOCKEY (m): Tremblay tallies twice as Shank shackles Pats

TROIS-RIVIERES, Que – Team captain Samuel Tremblay of St. Hubert, Que., scored twice and rookie goaltender Alexis Shank of Laval, Que., made 43 saves as visiting McGill skated to a 4-2 victory over UQTR in men's hockey preseason play at Le Colisee, Friday.

McGill never trailed in this contest, leading 2-1 after the opening stanza and 3-1 after two.

The Pats had a 45-32 edge in shots but were no match for Shank, a 5-foot-11, 182-pound product of the QMJHL's Chicoutimi Sagueneens, who was invited to the Montreal Canadiens rookie camp in 2019. It was the first career win at the collegiate level for the 21-year-old economics freshman who evened his preseason record at 1-1. He also lowered his goals-against average to a stingy 1.58, to accompany a sizzling .958 save percentage.

Tremblay, a fifth-year senior, put McGill ahead 2-1 at 18:04 of the second period and added an empty-netter to ice the contest with 37 seconds remaining in the final period.

Sophomore Andrew McIntyre of Kitchener, Ont., had opened the scoring in the first period with his first career goal, unassisted, at the 9:11 mark. but the Pats knotted the score four minutes later when third-year centre William Leblanc connected. After Tremblay struck to regain McGill's lead late in the first period, freshman Caiden Daley of Winnipeg, made it 3-1 for the Redbirds. It was his second of the preseason on a power-play, and occured just 87 seconds into the middle frame. UQTR narrowed the gap in the late stages of the game when Jordan Martel found the back of the net with just 3:49 remaining in regulation.

McGill went 1-for-3 on the power-play, while snuffing out all six shorthanded situations. Pats netminder Tristan Cote-Cazenave took the loss, conceding three goals on 31 shots fired his way before being pulled for an extra attacker.

The two long-time rivals will battle each other again on Saturday (Oct. 30) in the back-end of a home-and-home series. Puck drop is 7 p.m. at McConnell Arena, but close access to the vicinity will be almost impossible by car as the Montreal Alouettes are hosting a football game at the same time in Percival Molson Stadium.
