MONTREAL –
Mohammad Reza-Nafar of Montreal scored the game-winner and assisted on another to spark a second-half rally as Concordia edged visiting McGill 2-1 in a key men's university soccer matchup, Sunday.
With one game remaining, the result clinched the final playoff berth in the RSEQ conference for Concordia (5-3-3) and eliminated fifth-place McGill (3-6-2) from a chance at post-season play.
The Redbirds appeared poised for a much-need victory just six minutes into the contest. Midfielder
Nicolas Destaing, a freshman midfielder from France, converted a pass from Montrealer
Younes Lachgar.
But the Stingers rose from the dead early in the second half when
Reza-Nafar set up striker
Simon Spenard-Lapierre for the equalizer in the first minute after the intermission, then tallied the deciding marker 18 minutes later.
Collecting the victory between the pipes for Concordia was
Jordy Kerlegrand, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound 'keeper from Montreal, who saved one of the two shots fired his way. For McGill, senior
Chris Cinelli-Faia of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., kicked out eight of 10 shots in a losing cause.
The Redbirds will close out their schedule at sixth-place Sherbrooke (1-8-1) on Oct. 29 in an 8:15 p.m. kickoff. That game will mark the final appearance in a McGill uniform for three graduating seniors, namely
Cameron Butterfield,
Chris Flores and
Juliano Cobuzzi.
