MONTREAL – Five different players scored for the No.1 ranked Universite de Montreal Carabins as they cruised to a 5-0 victory over McGill in men's university soccer at Percival Molson Stadium, Wednesday.
It was the third game in six night's for the fifth-place Redbirds, who rested all 11 starters in anticipation of facing a must-win game at Concordia on Sunday at 1 p.m. With two road games left on the schedule McGill (3-5-2), trails Concordia (4-2-3) by four points in the RSEQ standings and needs to have a full lineup ready to play for that critical game.
As a result, the youthful Redbirds lineup was easy pickings for U de M, which improved to 8-1 on the season and have now won seven straight meetings with McGill.
Lohan Lefevre and
Julien Bruce scored less than two minutes apart to give the visitors a 2-0 lead by the 18th minute of play.
Alexis Stevens made it 3-0 in the 40th minute. Rounding out the scoring was
Souleymane Camara, Jr., (54th) and Olivier D'Anjou (86th).
The Carabins had a 17-2 margin in attempted shots, including a 9-0 edge on net. They also had a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks
It was a relatively tame game as far as this rivalry is concerned, with Montreal taking 13 of the 22 fouls called by the referee. There were three yellow cards issued in the contest, with McGill's
Stephen Kajiru and
Eric Koerich booked in the 45th and 50th minutes. For the Carabins,
Mohamadou Sylla was cautioned in the 73rd minute.
Montreal goalkeeper
Felix Goulet didn't have to make one save to earn his sixth shutout of the season as his record improved to 8-1. For McGill, sophomore
Victor Henry, a native of France, earned his fifth start of the season and saved four of nine shots as his record dropped to 1-5.
The Redbirds wore pink armbands in support of the annual "Pink Day" breast cancer fundraiser held in the first game of the soccer doubleheader, between the Carabins and Martlets, who were dressed in pink-coloured uniforms.
It was the final home game for McGill's three graduating seniors, namely
Cameron Butterfield,
Chris Flores and
Juliano Cobuzzi.
Butterfield is a midfielder from St. Leonard, Que., while Flores, is a defender from St. Hubert, Que. Both are fifth-year electrical engineering majors. Cobuzzi, a defender from St. Leonard, Que., is a chemical engineering senior.
"They have been an integral part of our soccer program and have been outstanding student-athletes and role models for their teammates, both on the soccer pitch and in the classroom," said McGill head coach
Marc Mounicot. "They will be missed and we wish them the best of success in their future endeavours."
