Victoria Iannotti of St. Laurent, Que., scored a game-high 20.5 points as the McGill women's volleyball team kicked off their RSEQ regular season opener with a 3-1 road victory over UQTR at the Centre CAPS, Sunday. The set scores were 25-12, 25-12, 23-25 and 25-15.
The Martlets improved to 8-0 lifetime against UQTR, which has returned to the Quebec league this season after leaving in 2007.
Iannotti, a 5-foot-8 power-hitter, racked up 16 kills in just four sets, to go along with a pair of service aces and 2.5 blocks, The 22-year-old software engineering junior also contributed three digs on defence.
Charlene Robitaille, a senior middle-blocker from St. Jean, Que., had 10 points on the strength of nine kills and an ace. She added 10 digs and three assists.
Clara Poire, a right-side hitter from Blainville, Que., led the defence with a game-high 11 digs to go along with three blocks. The kinesiology junior also had two kills and a pair of assists.
Veteran setter
Audrey Trottier of Longueuil, Que., collected 26 assists to stabilize the Martlets attack.
McGill had a 39-29 edge in kills, and an 11-4 margin in stuff blocks, while the Patriotes had a slight upper hand in digs (44-42) and aces (5-4). UQTR committed 36 errors, compared only a dozen by McGill.
Leading the way for the Pats was
Laurence Flamand, who tallied a dozen points, 11 of them on kills.
UQTR (0-2) is off until Oct. 29 when they travel to Montreal to play the Carabins (0-1).
The Martlets (1-0) will host Sherbrooke (1-0) in their home opener at Love Competition Hall on Friday, Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for all home games this year are capped at 250 per game and only available online. Vaccine passports are required to be admitted.
