MONTREAL --
Jael-Esther Telfort of Boucherville, Que., scored 12.5 points as Sherbrooke surprised McGill 3-1 in the RSEQ women's volleyball home opener at Love Competition Hall, Friday. The upstart Vert & Or improved their division-leading record to 2-0 on the season, winning by set scores of 25-21, 26-24, 14-25 and 25-22.
The contest was even closer than that, with the visitors holding slight statistical margins in kills (35-34), stuff blocks (11-8) and assists (35-34), while McGill had a scant edge in aces (8-6) and digs (47-37).
Telfort, a 5-foot-11 power-hhitter, tallied her points on nine kills, three service aces and an assisted block, to go along with three digs.
The Martlets had three players reach double digits in scoring, led by
Clara Poire, a 6-foot-2 right-side hitter from Blainville, Que., who tallied 11 points on the strength of five kills, three aces and three blocks. The kinesiology junior added three digs on defence.
Teammates
Brook Brown of Clearwater, Fla., and
Charlene Robitaille of St. Jean, Que., added 10.5 and 10 points, respectively, while junior power-hitter
Victoria Iannotti of St. Laurent, Que., contributed 9.5 points and seven digs. Sophomore setter
Audrey Trottier of Longueuil, Que., was credited with 29 assists and a dozen digs.
McGill (1-1) has a day off before making the short jaunt around Mt. Royal to play the Montreal Carabins (1-1) on Sunday at 1 p.m. Sherbrooke (2-0) will host Ottawa (0-1) at the same time.
