SOCCER (w): Bordeniuk bags goose egg as Martlets blank Pats

MONTREAL –  Brenna Bordeniuk of Calgary earned a shutout and four different players scored as the McGill women's soccer team cruised to a 4-0 victory over UQTR on Sunday at Percival Molson Stadium

The resulted extended McGill's undefeated streak against the Patriotes to 4-0-3.

Bordeniuk, a science freshman who had missed the past two contests with an undisclosed injury, needed only two saves to register her second clean sheet of the season.

The Martlets led 2-0 at halftime and added another pair in the second stanza.

McGill had a 19-3 edge in attempted shots, including a 12-2 margin on net. Senior Giovanna Tiberio of Montreal was credited with the winning goal only five minutes into the contest.

Five minutes later, Liliane Lefebvre set up striker Thalia Krauth-Ibarz for her league-leading sixth goal of the season. The science freshman from Brossard, Que., has a slim one-goal lead over Montreal's Maxyme Nobert, Laval's Joelle Mercier and Sherbrooke's Marilou Dugrenier, each tied for second in the scoring race with five markers.

After the intermission, forward Noemi Briollais, a senior from Toronto, made it 3-0 and Victoria Sturgess put the contest out of reach in the 73rd minute. It was the first goal of the campaign for the senior striker from Quakertown, Penn., who was injured in preseason play. Sophomore Sara Escallon-Sotomayor of Toronto, added a helper on the play.

Florence Bilodeau, the UQTR 'keeper, took the loss, making eight saves in vain.

It was a tame affair with only 13 fouls called -- nine to UQTR -- and no penalty cards issued.

McGill, which improved to 4-3-3, remains in fourth place, five points behind third-place UQAM (6-2-2).  Four games remain before playoffs, with the division-leading Montreal Carabins (10-0) looking to extend their unblemished record when they visit Molson Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m.

The Pats (2-7-1) remain sixth in the eight-team Quebec league and  will host Bishop's (2-6-2) on Oct. 22
