MONTREAL –
Maxyme Nobert of Fermont, Que., scored twice for the No.2 ranked Universite de Montreal Carabins as they blanked McGill 2-0 in women's university soccer at Percival Molson Stadium, Wednesday.
It was the annual "Pink Day" breast cancer fundraiser for the Martlets, who were dressed in pink-coloured uniforms, instead of their traditional red and white.
Nobert, a sophomore striker, tallied what proved to be the game-winner in the ninth minute of play, then added an insurance marker in the 66th minute.
Carabins goalkeeper
Catherine Langelier of St. Eustache, Que., was called upon to make only one save for her sixth shutout of the season as she improved her record to 9-0. For McGill,
Brenna Bordeniuk, a freshman from Edmonton, saved four of six shots and took the loss as her record fell to 4-3-1.
U de M had an 18-5 territorial advantage in shots attempted, including an 8-2 margin on net. The Carabins, who are coached by former McGill star
Kevin McConnell, dominated 11-0 in corner kicks and took 12 of the 20 fouls called.
The only yellow card issued by the referee went to Carabins defender
Nathalie Brunelle, a former two-time all-star with McGill who also played for Canada at the 2019 FISU world university games. She graduated last year and transferred to U de M for a second degree. She was unable to play for McGill in her senior year due to the cancellation of the season. In a touching pre-game moment, Brunelle was presented with her framed McGill jersey from Martlets head coach
Jose-Luis Valdes.
"We had a disappointing start, we're better than we showed at the beginning of the game," said Valdes. "Our players didn't show confidence in their abilities today. We seem to wait until we score a goal before we kick into gear and play our game. The second half was better, we showed more character and determination and had more fun. Now we have to close out the season like we can."
With three games remaining on the schedule, the division-leading Carabins improved to 11-0 atop the RSEQ standings, outscoring their opponents 27-2. Their magic number to clinch the regular season title ahead of Laval (7-1-2) is just two points.
McGill (4-4-3) sits in the fourth and final playoff berth, five points behind UQAM. Their magic number to clinch a spot in the post-season ahead of fifth-place Bishop's (2-6-2) is five points. The Martlets play at last-place Concordia (1-7-2) on Sunday (Oct. 24) at 3:15 p.m., followed by another road game, against seventh-place Sherbrooke (2-8-0) on Oct. 29 and the season finale at home against Bishop's.
