MONTREAL --
Cynthia Smith scored in the 56th minute of play as the UQAM Citadins blanked visiting McGill 1-0 in Quebec university women's soccer at Stade Saputo, Friday.
It was a costly setback for the fourth-place Martlets (3-3-3), who trail the Citadins (5-2-2) by five points in the RSEQ standings. McGill, which battled UQAM to a 0-0 tie in their previous meeting at Molson Stadium, is now 0-4-1 in the last five confrontations with their pesky cross-town rivals, who have outscored the Martlets 7-1 during that span.
UQAM had a 10-4 edge in shots on net as goalkeeper
Andreanne Dubeau posted a four-save shutout for the victory. McGill 'keeper
Jasmine Lightfoot made nine saves in a losing cause.
Three yellow cards were issued by the officials, two of them to the Martlets.
Audrey Moyen and
Giovanna Tiberio were booked for McGill, while
Luce Illy was assessed the caution for UQAM.
Five games remain before post-season play and McGill will host sixth-place UQTR (2-6-1) on Sunday in a 3:30 p.m. kickoff at Molson Stadium.
