MONTREAL – Younes Lachgar scored tallied the game-winner in the dying moments and goalkeeper Chris Cinelli-Faia posted a seven-save shutout to give McGill a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the UQAM Citadins in RSEQ men's soccer at Stade Saputo, Friday.
 
Lachgar, a native Montrealer, fired a shot past UQAM 'keeper Younes Soubaa in the 88th minute of play. It was the first career goal for the 5-foot-10 midfielder who will celebrate his 23rd birthday on Oct. 20. Lachgar made the team as a walk-on in 2019 and over his two seasons, the physical education junior has dressed for all of McGill's 20 league games.
 
Cinelli-Faia, a 5-foot-7 goalkeeper from Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., stood tall between the pipes for the Redbirds. The physical education senior made seven saves, including a number of acrobatic stops, to earn his first shutout of the season.
 
The game was a testy affair that featured seven cards, including two ejections. McGill's Sebastian Cobuzzi and UQAM's Lois Akpetoi were both red-carded during a skirmish after the final whistle and both will have to serve automatic one-game suspensions. Yellow cards were issued to three UQAM players and two from McGill.
 
The result kept McGill's playoff hopes alive as the Redbirds improved 3-4-1 in the league standings. With four games remaining, McGill sits fifth in the seven-team Quebec conference, four points behind Laval, which is currently perched in the final playoff berth.
 
The Redbirds will host second-place UQTR (5-2-1), the defending national champions, on Sunday. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Percival Molson Stadium.
