QUÉBEC CITY –
Carrie-Ann Auger and
Maude Archambault, the usual suspects, both reached double digits for the second straight game, helping ninth-ranked Laval defeat McGill 55-40 in RSEQ women's basketball at the Centre PEPS, Friday.
It was a second clash in 48 hours between the sides after the Rouge & Or earned a 57-46 road win in a rare mid-week duel at Love Competition Hall, Wednesday night.
McGill's record dropped to 2-6 while Laval improved to 5-2, taking hold of first place in the Quebec league standings.
The visitors were led by third-year forward
Kamsi Ogbudibe of Calgary, who tallied 10 points. The six-foot microbiology major shot 2-for-5 from the field, collected three rebounds and recorded one assist.
The Martlets had a 10-8 edge after the opening quarter but Laval pulled ahead 26-21 at halftime and led 36-31 after three. The Rouge et Or went on to dominate the final quarter, outscoring McGill 19-9.
Overall, Laval shot 33.3 per cent from the field (19-57), 36.4 from three-point range (8/22) and went 9-for-15 on their free-throws. McGill shot 19.3 per cent from the floor (11/57), made only four of 26 from beyond the arc but managed a lofty 87.5 per cent success rate from the charity stripe (14/16).
Laval had a 41-30 rebounding advantage and a favourable 20-14 difference in turnovers. The Martlets held a 10-6 edge in steals, a 2-1 margin in blocks and were kept in the game by a 23-point performance from the bench.
Auger shot 5-for-8 from the field, including 2-for-4 from downtown. The 23-year-old from Ottawa had no free-throw opportunities but recovered four rebounds, earned four assists and one steal. She also led her team in rebounding with eight, an identical record to her outing in Montreal two days prior.
Both sides are back in action on Jan. 16 as McGill (2-6) visits third-place UQAM (3-3) in search of its first win of 2020 while Laval (5-2) travels to Bishop's (4-1).
