Véronique Boivin scored 18 points as the UQAM Citadins defeated visiting McGill 73 - 57 in women's basketball at their Centre Sportif, Thursday.
The result was McGill's second straight setback to the Citadins after snapping an 11-game win streak against them and dropped their lifetime record to 47-25 in 72 head-to-head meetings.
It was also the fourth straight loss in league play for the Martlets, who dropped to 2-7, while UQAM evened their record at 4-4.
The Citadens took a 20-17 lead after the first quarter, stretched it to a 34-27 margin at halftime and held a 43-53 advantage after three.
McGill had a 36-28 edge in rebounds and an 8-5 margin in steals. UQAM held small advantages in blocked shots (2-0) and turnovers (10-9).
Boivin, a 23-year-old physical education senior from Quebec City, shot 6-for-13 from the floor, 4-for-7 from beyond the arc and was perfect on both freebies. She also registered three rebounds, an assist and a steal. Teammate
Inga Aleksaiete tallied 6 points, two freebies and tallied a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Martlets were led offensively by two players off the bench.
Shayann Laguerre from Laval, Que., scored 13 points, collected five rebounds and had a pair of steals. Teammate
Nadege Pluviose added a dozen points with a team-high eight rebounds and two assists.
McGill connected on only 29.7 per cent of their attempts from the field (19/64), went a mere 5-for-25 from the arc and drained 14 of 17 attempts at the charity stripe. The Citadens, who shot a 46.6 per cent (27/58), drained nine of 23 treys and shot an impressive 10 of 11 from the line.
Both teams have a day of rest, and will meet again on Saturday (Jan. 18) for a rematch at Love Competition Hall, tip-off set for 4 p.m.
