Rémillard rifles game-winner, Matysiak merits shutout as Bishop's blanked

LENNOXVILLE, QUE – Freshman Alexia Remillard scored the game-winner and sophomore Annabelle Matysiak posted a shutout, lifting the McGill women's soccer team to a 1-0 road victory over Bishop's, Sunday, at Coulter Field.

It was McGill's third consecutive clean sheet over Gaiters and extended their shutout sequence to 346 minutes dating back to the 14th minute of a 3-1 victory on Sept. 21, 2018. The Martlets, who improved to 5-4-0 in the RSEQ standings, have now won 55 of 57 lifetime contests against Bishop's since the Gaiters joined the league in 1992. Bishop's dropped to fifth place in the eight-team conference with a 2-6-2 record.

Rémillard, a 5-foot-7 forward from Repentigny, Que., who was making her first regular-season appearance on the field, came off the bench at halftime to break the deadlock in the 68th minute. The 20-year-old nursing major converted a flick pass from veteran forward Giovanna Tiberio, who lofted a long ball from the left flank over the Gaiters' backline.

"The girls played well right from the start. It was difficult to play Bishop's today because they were very well-organized and have a ton of grit," said head coach Jose-Luis Valdes, whose troops defeated the Gaiters 6-0 earlier this season "We were looking for the spaces on the field and sure enough (they came in the second half). A couple substitutions at halftime allowed us to push, get a little more rhythm and trust the process."

"Bishop's has gotten much better over the last couple of years," he said. "They're getting results and these are going to be the types of games that we will face more and more with playoffs getting closer. Its going to be one-goal games."

Matysiak made four saves for the shutout while Mehana Haines matched that total in a losing cause for Bishop's.

McGill had a 15-9 edge in shots toward the goal, including a 5-4 edge in shots on net. The Martlets had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The game featured 16 fouls, including nine to McGill. One caution was issued to each team. Tiberio received a yellow card for McGill, while Kalin O'Brien was carded for the Gaiters.

McGill (5-4-0) returns to Molson Stadium to host seventh-place Concordia (1-7-1) on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m.

The Gaiters (2-6-2) battle Sherbrooke (0-7-1) on Oct. 4 at Coulter Field.
