Sneaky Stingers score late, salvage surprising soccer saw-off with McGill

MONTREAL – Bryanna Campbell of LaSalle, Que., scored in the 83rd minute as the visiting Concordia Stingers salvaged a 2-2 draw against McGill in a women's university soccer game at Percival Molson Stadium, Thursday.

The result robbed McGill of clinching a playoff berth on their home turf. The Martlets, who sit fourth in the eight-team RSEQ conference with a 5-4-1 record, are one win away from clinching. Concordia, which staved off elimination, now sits seventh with a 1-7-2 record. The Stingers have four games remaining and sit 11 points behind McGill.

After being swept by the Stingers last season, McGill went 1-0-1 against their cross-town rivals this year.

Sarah Humes of Pointe Claire, Que., broke the ice early for Concordia in the eighth minute. Senior forward Ariane Ducharme evened the score at 1-1 for McGill 10 minutes later, beating Stingers' goalie Gabriela Angoso-Jimenez with a curling top corner shot for her fourth of the season.

A tap in by Giovanna Tiberio, her seventh in 10 games, put McGill ahead 2-1 in the 35th minute, setting the stage for the unexpected tying marker. The 21-year-old psychology major sits third in the Quebec conference scoring race. Only Montréal's Mégane Sauvé and Laval's Jessica Bunker rank higher with eight goals apiece.

McGill had a 25-9 margin in shots toward the goal, including a 10-7 edge in shots on net. The Martlets also had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Goalkeeper Annabelle Matysiak of Vancouver, B.C., made five saves to earn the draw for McGill while Angoso Jimenez stopped eight shots, including a finger-tip save in the 70th minute to deny Tiberio's second of the match.

The game featured 24 fouls (15 to Concordia) but no yellow cards were issued to either side.

In honour of Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Martlets sported all-pink uniforms during the contest. The campaign runs through the entire month of October.

Both teams will see action again on Sunday (Oct. 6) as Concordia (1-7-2) hosts division-leading UQAM (9-0-0) in an early afternoon start. McGill (5-4-1) visits Stade CEPSUM to play second-place Montréal (8-1-1) at 3:30 p.m.
