Soccer striker Saheb scores PK winner as McGill men make Citadins arrest

MONTREAL – Forward Dalin Saheb of Montreal scored the game-winner on a penalty shot in the 74th minute, lifting the McGill University men's soccer team to a 2-1 Homecoming Game victory against UQAM at Percival Molson Stadium, Friday.

The result halted an 0-2-1 winless skid for McGill and extended the Citadins winless streak to 0-2-2 since their last conquest, a 1-0 decision over McGill on Sept. 6 at Stade Saputo. Now both teams find themselves in a three-way struggle with Laval --- each with a 2-3-2 record -- for the last two playoff spots in the seven-team RSEQ conference.

With five games remaining before playoffs, the trio trails undefeated Montréal (6-0-1) and second-place Laval (4-2-0).

It was an intensely contested match which featured 32 fouls and cautions to seven different players, including five yellow cards to the home side. McGill held a 7-5 edge in shots on net and both sides had two corner kicks.

Saheb, a six-foot, 168-pound striker, set up sophomore Florian Bettelli, a native of France, for the opening goal in the 36th minute of play, then put McGill ahead 2-0 in the 29th minute of the second half. A software engineering junior, Saheb is now McGill's leading scorer with four goals in seven games.

Theo Farineau, a 6-foot-2 goalkeeper, made four saves on five shots for the victory in the McGill net. The political science junior from France lost his shutout in the final minute on a penalty-kick by UQAM's Nazim Belguendouz.

Valentin Lamoulie took the loss for UQAM, conceding two goals on seven shots.

UQAM (2-3-2) will host second-place UQTR (4-2-0) at Stade Saputo on Sept. 30, while McGill (2-3-2) returns to action on Thursday, Oct., 3 when they host Concordia (1-1-4) at 8:15 p.m.
