MONTREAL –
Mehdi Ibn-Ibrahim scored twice and
Theo Farineau earned a shutout as the McGill University men's soccer team cruised to a convincing 4-0 win against Concordia, on a rainy night at Percival Molson Stadium, Thursday.
The result extended McGill's undefeated streak to 5-0-1 over the Stingers since a 1-0 loss on Oct. 30, 2016, which knocked McGill out of a playoff berth.
McGill, which improved to 3-3-2, now sits tied for third in the seven-team RSEQ conference, with four games remaining before playoffs. Concordia dropped to 1-3-4 and remains in sixth place but could still finish as high as third.
It was a scoreless draw until the game was turned on its head five minutes before halftime, when Concordia defender
Matthew François was ejected after receiving a second caution in less than 14 minutes.
Ibn-Brahim, a mathematics senior from Casablanca, Morrocco, made the advantage count as his shot on a McGill counter squeaked between the legs of Concordia goalkeeper
Julian Petrilli in the 41st minute of play. The home side doubled their lead a dozen minutes into the second half when France native
Florian Bettelli headed the ball into the net after a remarkable combination play with midfielders
Michael Makepeace and
Cameron Butterfield.
Ibn-Brahim, a 5-foot-7, 160-pound striker, potted his second of the match in the 66th minute and rookie
Jean-Marc Yao of Ottawa, put the contest out of reach with his first career goal in league play.
The match featured 24 fouls, including nine by Concordia, which was issued a pair of yellow cards and the automatic red. McGill had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks and an 8-3 margin in shots on target.
Farineau, 6-foot-2, 165-pound goalkeeper, blanked Concordia's offence with three saves. It appeared that the political science junior from France was going to lose his shutout in the 50th minute when referee
Andrew Buciora pointed to the spot for a Concordia penalty kick but a review with the linesman overturned the decision.
Petrilli made three saves on eight shots and was saddled with the loss for Concordia.
McGill (3-3-2) now has to play three consecutive road games -- at Montreal, UQTR and Sherbrooke -- before closing out their schedule at home to Laval on Oct. 20.
Up next is a challenging confrontation on Sunday (Oct. 6) against first-place Montréal (7-1-1), the defending national champions, at Stade CEPSUM. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. McGill will be looking for their first win over the Carabins in five years, since a 2-1 road victory on Sept. 21, 2014.
Also on Sunday, Concordia (1-3-4) hosts the Citadins (2-4-2).
