Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Rafael Figueroa

Soccer squad settles for sombre stalemate with Sherbrooke

MONTREAL – Striker Vincent Aubin scored the game-tying goal in the 71st minute of play as last place Sherbrooke surprised McGill with a 2-2 draw in men's university soccer at Percival Molson Stadium, Sunday.

It halted a six-game winless streak for the last-place Vert & Or, who improved to 0-5-1 in RSEQ standings. McGill, which has been the victim of numerous hard-luck losses this season, dropped to sixth place with a 1-3-2 record.

McGill thoroughly dominated play, holding ball possession for 66 per cent of the game, along with a 17-7 margin in attempted shots, a 6-4 advantage in shots on net and an 8-3 edge in corner kicks. It appeared that the host side was on the road to victory when three players connected on a tic-tac-toe play in the dying minutes but that play was ruled offside.

McGill squandered a plethora of other glorious opportunities, hitting multiple goal-posts and being within inches of beating Sherbrooke 'keeper Antoine Goulet, who faced six shots and made four saves to earn the tie.

McGill's Dalin Saheb, a software engineering junior from Montreal, opened the scoring in just the 12th minute when he connected on a penalty shot. But striker Alexis Yelle replied for the visitors in the 27th minute and the teams headed into halftime even at 1-1.

McGill sniper Mehdi Ibn-Brahim, a senior from Laval, Que., converted in the 51st minute -- with his team-leading third marker in five games --  but that was all for naught when Aubin struck paydirt some 20 minutes later.

Theo Farineau started between the pipes for McGill and was credited with the tie, conceding two goals on four shots.

The game featured 29 fouls, including 19 to the visitors. Four yellow cards were issued, with two of them going to each team.

McGill (1-3-2) will host visiting UQAM (2-2-2) in the annual Homecoming Game on Friday, Sept. 27. Kickoff follows the women's game and is slated for 8:15 pm at Percival Molson Stadium.  Sherbrooke (0-5-1) will continue to search for their first win when they battle UQTR (4-2-0) at Trois-Rivieres on Sept. 26.
