No.4 ranked Carabins clip Martlets wings in cross-town soccer confrontation

MONTREAL – Goalkeeper Érika Bastien of Repentigny, Que., registered a no-save shutout as the No. 4 ranked Montreal Carabins blanked McGill 2-0 in RSEQ women's soccer before a boisterous crowd of 408 fans at Percival Molson Stadium, Thursday.

The encounter was the first meeting between these arch-rivals since U de M edged McGill 4-3 on penalty kicks in a conference semifinal last October en route to winning the league championship. McGill has now dropped six straight to the Carabins and not taken points from Montreal since a 0-0 home-field draw on Sept. 15, 2017.

Freshman midfielder Katya Houpert of Joliette, Que., opened the scoring with her first of the season in the 35th minute of play. Teammate Mégane Sauvé, a third-year midfielder from St. Hyacinthe, Que., added an insurance marker in the 90th minute, extending her league-leading total to five goals.

Both goals came off powerful top-corner strikes, leaving little chance for Martlets goalkeeper Annabelle Matysiak, a sophomore from Vancouver,  who made one save and took the loss.

Montreal had a 7-5 edge in attempted shots, including a 3-0 tally on target. The visitors also had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks and McGill was assessed 11 of the 17 fouls called in the game. There were no cards issued by the officials.

McGill, which sits fourth in the RSEQ standings with a 3-3-0 record, returns to action on Sunday afternoon when they play host to eighth-place Sherbrooke (0-4-1) at 3:30 p.m. At the same time, on the other side of Mt. Royal, the Carabins (4-1-1) will kick-off against Concordia (1-3-1) at Stade CEPSUM.
