Triple threat Tiberio tallies three to take down Sherbrooke soccer squad

MONTREAL – A flurry of second half goals, including a Giovanna Tiberio hat-trick, led McGill to a convincing 6-1 drubbing of Sherbrooke in women's soccer team at Percival Molson Stadium, Sunday.

It was McGill's highest offensive outburst since a 6-0 home victory over Bishop's earlier this season (Aug. 28) and prior to that, equaled the output tallied in a 6-0 whitewash at Bishop's on Sept. 20, 2013. The Martlets, who swept both confrontations against Sherbrooke in each of the last two years, have now won five consecutive meetings and improved their head-to-head record to 7-10-2 against the Vert & Or since 2011.

It was the second hat-trick of the season for Tiberio, an imposing 5-foot-10 striker from Montreal. The 21-year-old psychology junior now sits third in the league scoring race with six goals and one assist .

Forward Ariane Ducharme, an architecture junior from Notre Dame des Prairies, Que., added a pair, connecting in the 22nd and 54th minutes of play. Freshman Audrey Moyen was credited with the game-winner in the 53rd minute on what was her first career goal in RSEQ regular season play.

McGill 'keeper Annabelle Matysiak earned the victory after making an unscheduled appearance. She came into the contest during the 41st minute, in relief of starter Jeanne Evrard who had saved the only shot she faced before a violent collision with Sherbrooke's Gaëlle Duplessis-Lebel inside the box. Duplessis-Lebel was issued a red card on the play.

Matysiak, a 5-foot-9 sophomore from Vancouver, B.C., was beaten on one of three shots, by Sherbrooke's Sarah Leclerc in the 56th minute.

The Martlets (4-3-0) will now prepare for their annual Homecoming game on Friday, Sept. 27 when they host the undefeated UQAM Citadins (7-0-0).  Sherbrooke (0-5-1) travels to Trois-Rivières on Thursday, Sept. 26 to confront UQTR (1-4-1).
