Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Rafael Figueroa

Sure-footed soccer squad skunks Stingers succinctly

MONTREAL – Jeanne Evrard, a junior goalkeeper from Montreal, posted a two-save shutout and the McGill women's soccer team exploded for a barrage of second half goals en route to a 3-0 road victory against the Stingers at Concordia Stadium, Sunday .

The result ended McGill's winless streak at 0-3-1 against Concordia.

The visitors, which held a resounding 12-2 edge in shots, maintained ball possession for 60 per cent of the game and piled on the pressure for large spells but it still took 51 minutes to break through the Stingers defence. Veteran centreback Nathalie Brunelle potted her third goal of the season with what proved to be the game-winner. The Pierrefonds, Que., native was named as McGill's player of the game and is now tied for the team scoring lead with third-year forward Giovanna Tiberio.

"It has been a couple games now that Brunelle's taking more command of the backline," said head coach Jose-Luis Valdes of his co-captain. "She has to organize quite a bit and the last couple of games she's stepped it up. Her timing has been good. It's the second time now that she's been selected as Game MVP from the opposing coach. It is a sign that our opponents are having a hard time breaking through our defence and she's a big part of that."

Liliane Lefebvre, a freshman forward from Toronto, doubled the lead to 2-0 in the 68th minute with her second tally of the season.

The Toronto connection continued into stoppage time when freshman Ruqayya Hirji, a product of Sanjaxx Soccer Academy, came off the bench to make it 3-0 in the final minute.

McGill (3-2-0) returns home to face the Montréal Carabins on Thursday, Sept. 19 at Percival Molson Stadium at 6 p.m. In another all-Montreal matchup, Concordia (1-3-1) will try to steal points from undefeated UQAM (5-0) on the grass turf at Stade Saputo on Sept. 20 at 6 p.m.
