McGill to open 119th season of college hoops vs NCAA's Bulls on Aug. 8

MONTREAL – The McGill University men's basketball team will open their 119th season on Thursday, Aug. 8, when they take on the NCAA's South Florida Bulls in a 6 p.m. tip-off at Place Bell in Laval, Que.

A limited number of advance tickets are on sale at only $10 for those who can make their way to the McGill Sports Shop in the Sir Arthur Currie Gymnasium, 475 Avenue des pins Ouest. General admission tickets will be sold online by Evenko at $15 for the hoops doubleheader, which also features a Concordia matchup with Quinnipiac at 8 p.m. Fans will also get a chance to see Carleton, the defending national champions, take on USF at Place Bell on Aug. 7.

The USF-McGill non-conference matchup will be the final contest of a four-game Canadian tour by the Bulls, who defeated UQAM 71-66 on Aug. 4 and Laval 89-73 on Aug. 5. South Florida will also play Carleton, the defending national champions, at Place Bell on Aug. 7.

The Bulls return all five starters from last season, when they posted a 24-14 record overall, en route to hoisting the program's first postseason championship trophy since 1990.

McGill, which has won five Quebec conference championships over the past seven years, is coming off a 14-15 mark last season. The team roster features seven freshmen, six sophomores, five juniors and a pair of seniors.

In addition to the USF game, McGill will host three other NCAA opponents, beginning with Valparaiso (Aug. 10), Quinnipiac (Aug. 12) and Albany (Aug. 19) at Love Competition Hall, inside the Currie Gym. McGill will also host the national team from Bermuda on Aug. 14.

Back for his 10th campaign behind the McGill bench is David DeAveiro, who will be entering his 19th season overall as a university head coach. The 54-year-old native of Toronto has guided Ottawa and McGill to a combined eight appearances at the Final Eight championship tournament, five of them by McGill, their first showings on a national stage since 1978.

Advance tickets for the other McGill home games vs NCAA opponents are available online. General admission for adults is $12, while staff, students and seniors are set at $5. Children 12-and-under are admitted free.
