Rouge et Or soccer squad leaves McGill men seeing red

QUEBEC CITY -- Charles Joly tallied twice as Laval rallied for a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over McGill in a hotly-contested men's soccer game at Stade Telus, Friday.

The game featured seven yellow cards and two reds, with McGill playing shorthanded for the final 37 minutes. Laval was assessed only two of the warnings.

Striker Mehdi Ibn-Brahim had given McGill a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of play but Joly tied the game in the 35th minute and struck for the winner on a disputed penalty-kick in the 85th minute.

McGill 'keeper Theo Farineau was injured in a goal-mouth collision with a Laval player -- which led to an empty-netter for the first goal -- and he had to leave the game. There was no card assessed to Laval on the play. Farineau was replaced by Cristiano Rossi, who played the final 51 minutes, conceded one goal on one shot and took the loss.

Ibn-Brahim, who had been assessed a yellow warning earlier, was then ejected after a collision with Laval rookie goalkeeper Philippe Blouin. When Farineau, the injured McGill 'keeper, objected from the bench, he too was red-carded, even though he was already out of the contest.

"We got robbed and it was atrocious and we lost control of our emotions," said McGill head coach Marc Mounicot. "We were very happy with the way we played. We were in control for most of the game  I think that we were a better team but the result was not what we expected. It's disappointing because we deserved better."

McGill, which had a 4-2 edge in shots on net, will be severely challenged in their next game without the services of their top striker and their No.1 goalkeeper, who will both be serving an automatic one-game suspension.

McGill (0-1-0) plays UQAM (1-1-0) at Stade Saputo on Sept. 6.
