MONTREAL --
Giovanna Tiberio of Montreal, tallied three times as the McGill University women's soccer team swamped Bishop's 6-0 to open the regular season, on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at Percival Molson Stadium.
It was the team's highest offensive output in 81 RSEQ league games, dating back to an identical 6-0 win at Bishop's on Sept. 20, 2013. The Martlets improved to 54-0-2 lifetime against the Gaiters since they joined the RSEQ conference in 1992.
Tiberio, a 5-foot-10 striker, became the first member of the Martlets to register a three-goal performance in a regular season contest since Sept. 20, 2015 when
Audrey-Ann Coughlan accomplished the feat in a 4-1 win at UQAM. Tiberio scored twice in a five-minute span to put the Martlets ahead 2-0 by the 22-minute mark. The 21-year-old psychology sophomore then completed her first career hat-trick in the 58th minute to put the home side ahead 4-0.
"It's a relatively new position for her and she's doing really well," said McGill head coach
Jose-Luis Valdes, who converted Tiberio to striker last season. She previously played as a midfielder at Dawson and at centre-back with her club team (FC St. Leonard). "She now understands the movements better and realizes how dangerous she can be and today we saw evidence of that."
Rounding out the scoring for McGill was junior forward
Victoria Sturgess of Quakertown, Penn., who made it 3-0 in the 28th minute, senior fullback
Nathalie Brunelle of Pierrefonds, Que., on a penalty-kick in the 63rd minute and
Liliane Lefebvre, a freshman forward from Toronto, who netted the game's final marker in the 85th minute.
"We've had several little injuries in the preseason and it forced us to play some people in different positions," said Valdes who was pleased to get goals from four different players. "We have a (versatile) well-balanced group that knows their responsibilities, depending on where they need to play and we are expecting them to produce so that takes some of the pressure of relying on just one person to handle most of the scoring.
"I was happy that we scored a couple of early goals, so that alleviated some of the (nerves) that usually happens in the first game of the season. We were also able to play all 17 players who dressed and several rookies had the opportunity to work out the jitters of playing their first game at Molson Stadium."
Goalkeepers
Annabelle Matysiak and
Jeanne Evrard shared the shutout in the McGill net. Matysiak, a 5-foot-6 sophomore from Vancouver, got the start, made one save and was credited with the victory. Evrard, a junior from Montreal, played the final 26 minutes and also made one save.
Goalkeeper
Ella Lee was saddled with the loss for Bishop's. The 5-foot-5 junior from Vancouver was beaten six times on eight shots.
Bishop's (0-1) will host Montreal (1-0), which crushed visiting Sherbrooke 11-1, on Friday in Lennoxville, Que. McGill (1-0) heads up to Quebec City on Friday to confront Laval (1-0), The Rouge et Or opened their campaign with a resounding 10-0 shutout at Concordia.
MARTLET MURMURS: Two of the team's three co-captains are currently out of the lineup, which meant that senior
Nathalie Brunelle was wearing the armband. Fifth-year senior
Tia Lore suffered a knee injury earlier in the summer at a U SPORTS training camp with the Canadian squad that went to the World University Games in Italy. The other captain is
Ariane Ducharme, an architecture junior, who is on a required school-related field trip this week.
