Hockey Ravens fire first salvo in McGill matchup of Top 10 teams

MONTREAL – Jared Steege of Cobden, Ont., scored a pair of goals as the third-ranked Carleton Ravens powered their way to a 6-4 triumph over No.7 McGill in an Ontario University Athletics men's hockey matchup of Top 10 teams at McConnell Arena, Friday.

The OUA East Division-leading Ravens improved their record to 10-1 and snapped a two-game losing skid to McGill. The hosts, who own a 36-29-1 record in 66 lifetime confrontations, dropped to 5-4-1.

Carleton, which had a 36-24 edge in shots, led 3-1 after the first period and 6-3 after two.

Steege scored about four minutes apart in the second period, his first was shorthanded to put Carleton ahead 4-1 at 5:30 and his second at even strength to make the score 5-2 with what proved the game-winner. Last season, the third-year junior also hurt McGill, scoring in overtime during the OUA East semifinals to eliminate the team from Queen's Cup contention.

Blake Hayward, a first-year transfer from the NCAA's Union College, tallied twice for McGill, registering his third and fourth goals in league play. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound psychology major from Vancouver, B.C., now has seven points, including six goals and one assist in 14 games overall.

Rounding out the scoring for the hosts was veteran defenceman Dominic Talbot-Tassi from Mascouche, Que., and senior forward Keanu Yamamoto of Spokane, Wash.,.

Talbot-Tassi, a fifth-year mining engineering senior, currently leads all OUA rearguards and is tied for fourth in the league scoring race with 13 points in 10 games played, including 10 assists.

Other marksmen for the Ravens included Brogan O'Brien, Wyatt Nosky, Alexandre Boivin and Dakota Odgers.

Carleton goaltender Justin Nichols needed only 20 saves for the victory and improved his record to 5-1. Taking the loss for McGill was starting netminder Louis-Philip Guindon from St. Joseph du Lac, Que., who turned aside 30 of 36 and saw his record drop to 5-3. Guindon was credited with his second career assist in 76 OUA games since joining the team in 2016.

McGill was 2-for-3 with the man advantage while Carleton only managed one goal on five power-plays.

McGill (5-4-1) visits Ottawa (4-3-0) on Saturday (Nov. 9) while Carleton (10-1) faces the Gee-Gees on Sunday.
