OTTAWA -- McGill rearguard
Dominic Talbot-Tassi broke two school records but was overshadowed by goaltender
Domenic Graham, who posted a 33-save shutout as Ottawa skated to a 3-0 whitewash over the visitors in OUA men's hockey at the Minto Sports Complex in the nation's capital, Saturday.
McGill (5-5-1), which sits one point ahead of the Gee-Gees (5-3-0), now holds a 106-86-10 lifetime record against Ottawa.
The Gee-Gees, who had a 41-33 edge in shots, scored once in each period, including an empty-netter with 64 seconds remaining.
Kevin Domingue was credited with the game-winner at 15:17 of the first period.
Marc Beckstead added an insurance marker at 15:36 of the second and
Connor Sills tallied the empty netter.
But it was Graham, a six-foot, 175-pound native of Aylmer, Que., who turned the table around on McGill, which had taken the previous meeting 4-2 on the strength of a 56-save performance by
Louis-Philip Guindon on Oct. 25. It was only second career shutout for Graham, a fifth-year senior, who improved to 5-1 on the season and 24-36 lifetime.
Guindon, who turned aside 38 of 40 shots, was saddled with the loss as his record dropped to 5-4.
The visitors from Montreal went 0-for-5 on the power-play, while the Gee-Gees went 0-for-3.
One of the few positive notes for McGill was that Talbot-Tassi quietly broke two school records for games played. The fifth-year senior from Mascouche, Que., has never missed an OUA game, suiting up in 123 consecutive, which breaks both, the team mark for most league appearances by a defenceman -- previously held by the late
Martin Routhier (1993-1998) -- and also team's ironman record in regular season play.
It was initially thought that Talbot-Tassi had surpassed the ironman mark in the season opener on Oct. 3 but a clerical error was recently discovered. The 113 consecutive games played by forward
Guillaume Doucet (2007-2011) was incorrectly believed to be the standard to aim for, but that was actually shy of the 122 played by forward
Jocelyn Perreault (1999-2004), who never missed a league game over his five seasons.
Including non-conference and playoff action, Talbot-Tassi has now played in 133 straight and is still chasing the team's "overall" record streak. That lofty mark is 157 consecutive games held by
Yves Beaucage, a former McGill captain and assistant coach, who skated from 1980 to 1984.
Ottawa gets a day off to recover before hosting division-leading Carleton (10-1-0) on Sunday (Nov. 10) at 7 p.m. Next week, McGill will host Ontario Tech (5-7-0) from Oshawa, Ont., and Laurentian (2-7-2), from Sudbury, on Nov. 15-16, respectively.
