Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Earl Zukerman

Volleyball squad stops slide, scores straight set win over Ottawa

MONTREAL -- Claire Vercheval scored a game-high 15 points and Charlene Robitaille added 14 as  McGill halted a four-game losing streak with a 3-0 sweep over Ottawa in RSEQ women's volleyball at Love Competition Hall, Sunday. The set scores were 25-23, 25-11 and 25-18.

The Martlets had the edge in most key categories, including kills (38-20), stuff blocks (7-6), digs (47-44) and assists (35-19).  The Gee-Gees had an 8-4 advantage in service aces.

"We displayed a very good (mind-set) today," said Rachele Beliveau, in her 29th season as head coach at McGill. "We've had good fight in every game but today, we were calm and in control. We didn't rush things. We had a difficult schedule to start the season against the toughest teams, on the road. So it was good to have a game at home, where we could feel comfortable."

Vercheval, a 6-foot-1 senior from Ste. Julie, Que., registered 13 kills and a pair of blocks, in addition to eight digs. Robitaille, a six-foot sophomore from Mont St. Gregoire, Que., posted a dozen kills with a pair of aces and a half-dozen digs.

Teammate Myriam Robitaille, a fifth-year senior from Terrebonne, Que., who was often double-teamed at the net, was limited to five kills, 2.5 blocks and a pair of digs.

Audrey Trottier of Longueuil, Que., came on in relief of starter Andreanne Tremblay and registered her first career 30-assist game. The 5-foot-10 freshman setter also added an ace and four digs.

Montrealer Rowan Fletcher, the Team captain, led the Martlets with 11 digs. She added two kills, 2.5 blocks and a pair of assists.

Kara Hayes topped the Gee-Gees with 10 points on the strength of eight kills, one ace and two assisted blocks.

McGill improved to 2-4 and moved four points ahead of the winless Gee-Gees (0-5). The two teams will meet again next week in the nation's capital in a Friday, Nov. 8 hook-up at Montpetit hall.
