Five Martlets reach double digits as volleyball squad gallops past Gee-Gees again

OTTAWA -- Claire Vercheval led a hungry pack of five players in double-digit scoring as the McGill women's volleyball team knocked off Ottawa for the second consecutive time with a 3-1 victory in the nation's capital, Friday. The set scores were 25-18, 25-27, 25-12 and 25-20.

"It was one of the few times that I can remember having that many hitters being involved in the offence," said Rachele Beliveau, in her 29th season at head coach at McGill. "We're big and tall at the net, so if we continue to have three or more options to hit with, it will be a good advantage for us."

It was the second straight victory for the Martlets after snapping a rare four-game losing streak. McGill had a 59-35 margin in kills and a 49-33 difference but the Gee-Gees had a 10-9 edge in service aces, 5-3 in stuff blocks and a 55-46 advantage in digs.

Vercheval, a 6-foot-1 power-hitter from Ste. Julie, Que., collected 17 points, while a multitude of teammates also contributed offensively, including Charlene Robitaille (15.5 pts), Elisabeth Perrault (11) and Myriam Robitaille (10.5).

Even setter Andreanne Tremblay got into the act with 10 points on five kills, four aces and a pair of assisted blocks. Tremblay, a 5-foot-10 science junior from Longueuil, Que., was all over the court, collecting nine digs and a season-high 41 assists, eight shy of her career best.

"She had a strong performance in all areas and she isolated a lot of hitters 1-on-1," said Beliveau. "It was good for her confidence to have a game like that and hopefully that will carry over for other games.

The Martlets, who sit fourth with a 3-4 record in the six-team RSEQ conference, now face a key matchup at second-place Laval (4-2) on Sunday (Nov. 10) in a game that will be streamed live on the Rouge et Or Facebook page at 2 p.m. McGill defeated Laval 3-1 in the season opener at home, before going on the aforementioned slump. The Rouge et Or have beaten three different teams thus far, including a two-game sweep over the upstart UQAM Citadins (4-2).
