QUEBEC CITY –
Quarry Whyne registered a "double-double" and was among five players to score at least 10 points as visiting McGill besieged Laval 90-75 in RSEQ men's basketball at the Centre PEPS, Thursday.
It was McGill's 12th win in 13 confrontations against Laval and improved the team's record to 4-1 on the season, while Laval dropped to 0-5. McGill also moved into first-place in Quebec league standings, two points ahead of Concordia, which holds one game in hand.
"We had a couple adjustments after the first quarter in defence and we just settled in at a half-court defensive end," noted McGill bench boss
David De Aveiro whose side narrowly led 21-20 after the opening quarter before outscoring Laval 27-16 and 26-14 in subsequent frames. "We set a tone defensively in the second quarter and just built on that in the third."
With a comfortable 74-50 advantage after three, McGill took their foot of the thrttle and Laval won the last segment 25-16.
Whyne was a particular standout, collecting 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, to go along with six assists in 32 minutes played. The 21-year-old economics sophomore from Montreal shot 5-for-11 from the field, 2-for-6 from beyond the arc and connected on 4 of 8 free-throws. He now ranks third on the team in scoring and 10th among league leaders with 14.5 points per game.
"It took Quarry a little while to get going. They had the best defender on him," said DeAveiro of his 6-foot-5, 190-pound shooting guard. "Then he started to figure out the game a little bit and he's starting to be more aggressive. Great second, third and fourth quarters."
McGill's other double digit performers included
Jamal Mayali (17 pts),
Sam Jenkins (12),
Sami Al-Uariachi (11) and
Levi Londole (10).
"Its nice to have that many players contributing in scoring. That way the defence can't lock in on one or two guys," noted DeAveiro, whose troops matched a single-game season high 23 assists. "But a big part of that is the way we shared the ball today."
Freshman
Steeve Joseph led Laval's scoring with a 27-point tally in a losing cause.
McGill shot 50.8 per cent from the field (33/65), 14-for-27 from the arc and 10-for-16 from the charity stripe. The Rouge et Or shot 40.3 per cent (25/62) and 29.0 (9/31) respectively, in addition to draining 16 of 23 freebies.
McGill (4-1) will host Bishop's (2-2) on Saturday, Nov. 30 in the annual
Pots & Pans Nite at 6 p.m. The Rouge et Or will head into until the new year with a winless 0-5 record and will open the second semester with a rematch on Jan. 8 with a road trip to Montreal.
