McGill hoopsters holster Gaiters, stretch streak in DeAveiro's 400th win

MONTREAL -- Quarry Whyne scored a game-high 20 points and Levi Londole added a "double-double" as McGill extended their win streak to four with a 79-73 conquest over Bishop's in men's basketball at Love Competition Hall, Saturday. It was head coach David DeAveiro's 400th career win overall -- he has a 190-132 record with McGill -- in 19 years as bench boss, including nine seasons at Ottawa.

The loss drops Bishop's to 2-3 while McGill improves to 5-1 including two victories over the Gaiters as the first semester of RSEQ University men's basketball wraps up.

McGill led 18-16 after the opening quarter and took a 39-26 lead into halftime. Bishop's, which outscored McGill 26-20 in the third, cut a 23-point McGill lead to just two midway through the fourth quarter, which they won by a slim 21-20 margin.

McGill won the turnover battle 21-16, which resulted in a lopsided 30-9 advantage on the scoreboard.

Whyne, who also had three rebounds, four assists and a steal, drained 9-of-18 shots from the floor, including a pair of treys.

All five starters scored in double figures for McGill, including Londole who tallied 11 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. It was the second time this fall that the 6-foot-8, 220-pound junior forward from LaSalle, Que., had ripped down a Baker's Dozen boards. He previously accomplished that feat in a preseason loss to Alberta on Oct. 19.

Other leading marksmen for the home team were Jamal Mayali of Toronto and Cameron Elliot, a freshman from Ottawa, with 11 points apiece.

Abdul Kamane and Ibrahim Ngom, a pair of Montrealers, each scored 18 points to  pace the Gaiters. Kamane also added 10 rebounds to complete the "double-double". BU Teammate Nervens Demosthene of Terrebonne, Que., contributed 15 points to round out the Gaiters in double figures.

McGill only went to the foul line six times in the contest and came away with three points, compared to the Gaiters, who were 10-for-18. The host squad shot 45.2 per cent from the field (33/73) and 34.5 from the three-point arc (10/29), compared to BU, which shot 41.3 (26/63) and 32.4 (11/34).

McGill and Bishop's are off now for the exam break and both will return to action at the UQAM's Olga Htycak Classic Tournament, Dec. 27-30, where McGill is slated to play Regina, Ottawa and Guelph, respectively.

McGill returns to regular season play on Wednesday, Jan. 8, when they host Laval. The Gaiters resume their RSEQ schedule against Laval on Jan. 16 at home.
