MONTREAL -- Quarterback
Frederic Paquette-Perrault rushed for 93 yards and passed for 161 more with a touchdown as the second-seeded Montreal Carabins cruised to a 39-6 RSEQ football semifinal victory over McGill before 3,125 at Stade CEPSUM, Saturday.
The result punched Montreal's ticket to next Saturday's Dunsmore Cup league championship game against top-seeded Laval, which disposed of Concordia 40-8 in the other semifinal.
It was a difficult conclusion to McGill's 119th season. The injury-plagued squad had to overcome a plethora of lineup scratches from last week's game, including quarterback
Dimitrious Sinodinos, tight end
Jean Bidaux and defensive end
Alexandre Pare, to name just a few. Then midway through the second quarter against the Carabins, they lost kicker
Findlay Brown after a non-penalized collision during a blocked punt.
Montreal has won 27 consecutive games over McGill, including previous playoff meetings in 2016 and 2018. They led by a 2-0 score after the opening quarter before opening the floodgates. They outscored their visitors 19-0 in the second quarter, 10-0 in the third and 8-6 in the final stanza. The Carabins collected 357 net yards compared to McGill's 165 and had a 20-13 advantage in first downs.
Paquette-Perrault, who transferred to the Carabins from McGill last year, completed nine of 17 passing attempts against his former mates, who sacked him five times, three by weak-side linebacker
Jean-Philippe Hudon, a senior from Levis, Que., who registered s.5 tackles in the game. The other sacks went to all-star defensive linemen
Andrew Seinet-Spaulding and
Joshua Archibald.
Paquette-Perrault hooked up with receiver
Danny Debrosse-Smith for a 38-yard TD strike to cap a three-play drive that put U de M ahead 9-0 at 5:27 of the second quarter.
The Carabins were credited with a safety touch on McGill's next drive and when they got the ball back, Paquette-Perrault dazzled the house with a 60-yard run to set up the next TD, a nine-yard run by
Kevin Dubois that all but put the game out of reach at 18-0.
Kicker
Louis-Philippe Simoneau added field-goals from 15 and 14-yards, respectively to make the score 24-0 by the five-minute mark of the third quarter. He ended up with 11 points, including a rouge on a missed 29-yarder.
Tailback
Reda Malki then tallied the second TD of the game on a one-yard plunge to put icing on the cake at 7:18 of the third stanza.
McGill's lone scoring play was a 23-yard TD reception by
Nicolas Baillargeon from
Jacob Samuels to narrow the gap at 31-6 early in the fourth quarter.
Samuels, a junior from Vancouver, B.C., who was making his first career playoff appearance, threw for 155 yards in the contest, only six fewer yards than the winning pivot on the other side of the field. He was 18-for-32 passing and was picked off once.
The Carabins added a late TD when
Antoine Chabot hauled in a six-ard TD toss from back-up quarterback
Dimitry Morand. Chabot finished with a game-high 102 all-purpose yards, including 43 on punt returns, 18 on kickoff returns, 29 on receptions and 12 rushing.
He edged out McGill's
Joel Soucy, who had 101 all-purpose yards, including a team-high 40 reception yards on four catches.
