MONTREAL –
Véronique Boivin scored 21 points and
Inga Aleksaite recorded a "double-double" as UQAM overwhelmed McGill 70-38 in an RSEQ women's basketball duel before a full house at the Centre Sportif, Thursday.
McGill dropped to 0-2, while UQAM evened its record at 1-1. Combined with last week's 43-35 loss to Laval, it marked the first time in 14 years that the Martlets had been held to under 40 points in consecutive outings, dating back to a 59-36 loss to UQAM (Jan. 21/05) and a 67-38 setback to Concordia (Jan. 23/05).
It was also UQAM's first victory against McGill in 11 games, since a 55-47 Citadins win on Jan. 13, 2017.
UQAM took an 11-5 lead after the first quarter, stretched it to a 33-20 margin at halftime and held a 53-34 advantage after three. The Citadins outscored McGill by a bizarre 17-2 margin in the final quarter.
The Citadins had a 42-37 edge in rebounds, a 9-4 margin in steals and held a 4-1 advantage in blocked shots. McGill committed 17 turnovers to UQAM's nine.
Boivin, a 23-year-old physical education senior from Quebec City, shot 7-for-17 from the field and was perfect on both her free-throw attempts. She also sank a third of her three-point shots (3/9) and pulled down nine rebounds in 27 minutes of play. Aleksaite registered 10 points, a game-high 13 rebounds, and tallied three assists.
McGill was led by
Sirah Diarra from Longueuil, Que., who scored nine points and collected four rebounds. Teammates
Nadege Pluviose and
Charlotte Clayton followed with seven points apiece. Both shot 3-for-11 in field goals while Pluviose led McGill in rebounding with 12 and Clayton had seven.
Rounding out the scoring for McGill was
Gladys Hakizimana (6),
Shayann Laguerre (5),
Ruth Tshikudi-Tshila (2) and
Geraldine Cabillo-Abante (2).
The Martlets shot 25 per cent from the field (15/60), made only three of 20 attempts from beyond the arc and succeeded on five of seven attempts from the line (71.4 per cent). UQAM shot 31.9 per cent from the field (27/69), including 8-for-28 from downtown (28.6 per cent) and had an 80 per cent success rate in free-throws (8/10).
The Citadins (1-1) will visit Bishop's (1-0) on Nov. 16 while McGill (0-2) also battle the Gaiters on the road five days later (Nov. 21) at 6 p.m.
