LENNOXVILLE, Que -- The freshman duo of
Deborah Aboagye and
Jael Kabunda tallied 18 points apiece as fifth-ranked Bishop's overpowered McGill 64-47 in an RSEQ women's basketball game, Thursday, at the Mitchell Gym.
Bishop's, which improved to 3-0, snapped a seven-game losing streak against McGill, dating back to a 52-40 home-court victory on Jan. 26, 2018. The Martlets, still in search of a 50-point offensive performance in league play, dropped to 0-3.
BU jumped into a 23-12 lead by the end of the first quarter, improved that to 32-23 at halftime and was up 55-37 after three. McGill outscored them 10-9 in the final stanza. Bishop's had a huge 24-16 edge in turnovers, including a 16-8 advantage in steals.
The Gaiters went 14-for-22 from the charity stripe, compared to McGill, which only made four trips to the line and came away with four points.
Aboagye, a 5-foot-9 guard from Montreal, shot 6-for-12 from the field and drained an impressive 4-for-8 on trey-shooting. She earned three steals, one rebound and one assist in 37 minutes of play. Kabunda shot 6-for-8 from the floor and sunk three of her four free-throw attempts. She also collected eight rebounds, one assist and a steal in 26 minutes of court time.
Amaiquen Siciliano was another thorn in McGill's side with a 17-point performance. The Martlets were unable to shut down the speedy 5-foot-5 guard from Argentina who only shot 6-for-19 from the field but caused four turnovers and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul-line.
McGill had three players in double-digit scoring, led by
Charlotte Clayton of Newmarket, Ont., who scored a team-high 16 points, with a 6-for-9 performance from the floor. The 5-foot-8 arts sophomore connected on two of four attempts from beyond the arc, and was perfect on both free-throw chances. She also corralled one rebound, had three assists and a pair of steals.
Also reaching double figures were
Nadege Pluviose (11 pts) and
Sirah Diarra (10). Nobody else in the McGill lineup drained more than two baskets.
The Martlets shot 45.2 per cent from the field (19/42), including a 5-for-14 effort from three-point range, and were 4-for-4 on free-throws. The Gaiters shot 38.2 per cent from the field (21/55) had a 27.6 per cent success rate from downtown (8/29). The Gaiters had a 31-25 rebounding advantage while McGill led 2-1 in blocked shots.
It will be a quick turnaround for both teams. Still in search of a first win this season, McGill (0-3) visits Concordia (1-2) on Saturday (Nov. 23) at 2 p.m. in a rare split doubleheader as the men's game between those cross-town rivals, which follows at 4 p.m., will be played at Love Competition Hall on the McGill campus.
First-place Bishop's (3-0) plays at Laval (2-1) on Nov. 24.
