MONTREAL –
Marianne Boucher scored 14 points and
Eva Chaine added 13 as the visiting Sherbrooke Vert & Or surprised McGill 3-2 in RSEQ women's volleyball at Love Competition Hall, Friday. The set scores were 25-13, 15-25, 18-25, 25-21 and 15-10.
It marked McGill's fourth consecutive league loss after defeating Laval in the season opener. The Martlets (1-4), who only lost three games all of last season (17-3), haven't suffered four straight league losses since 2016-17, when they finished third at 10-10.
A trio of McGill players – seniors
Myriam Robitaille and
Claire Vercheval, along with sophomore
Charlene Robitaille – each scored an unlucky total of 13 points in a losing cause.
"They were a bit more consistent on the first contact (with the ball) than we were today," said a disappointed McGill head coach
Rachele Beliveau. "We have to decrease our number of mistakes and find a way to score more points. We also have to decrease the number of errors in on-court communication."
Sherbrooke, which has now won two back-to-back meetings with McGill after losing all four confrontations last year, had the upper hand in kills (47-41), aces (14-8) and assists (46-48). The Martlets had the edge in stuff blocks (12-4) and digs (56-44).
McGill (1-4) will try to snap their losing skid when they host sixth-place Ottawa, which sits only two points back with a 0-4 record, on Sunday (Nov. 3) in a 1 p.m. tip-off at Love Competition Hall. Sherbrooke (2-3) will have a week off before hosting the Gee-Gees on Nov. 10.
