Marvelous maestro Mayali masterful again as McGill makes mincemeat out of Lions

TORONTO – Jamal Mayali continued his torrid scoring pace with 24 points as the McGill University men's basketball team defeated York 90-74 in preseason play at the Tait McKenzie Centre, Saturday.

It was the first encounter between the distant rivals since 2015 and the sixth consecutive win for McGill dating back to a 73-58 York victory on Sept. 30, 2006.

McGill trailed 20-17 after the first quarter and rallied to lead 40-34 at halftime but York narrowed the gap to 64-60 after three. However, an explosive 26-14 performance in the final stanza assured a weekend sweep for McGill, which upended the U of T Varsity Blues 76-70 the previous night.

Mayali, a 6-foot-3, 178-pound guard from Toronto, followed up Friday's 28-point outing against the Varsity Blues, with another fine effort. The 21-year-old political science junior netted 7-of-13 field-goal attempts and was 10-for-13 from the free-throw line in 32 minutes of court time. He added eight rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.

"I thought Jamal played extremely well this weekend," said head coach David DeAveiro. "He did all the little things and on defence he competed. On offence, he made great decisions and made the right reads. Defensively he was ferocious. He made things happen and caused turnovers."

Quarry Whyne, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Montreal, also tallied 24 points for McGill. He hit 8-for-16 from the floor and made six trips to the foul-line where he sank five shots. The 20-year-old economics sophomore added five assists, two rebounds, four steals and one blocked shot.

They were two of four McGill players to reach double figures in points, along with Levi Londole (14) and Sam Jenkins (14). Londole registered a second straight "double-double," including 11 rebounds, while Jenkins improved his team lead in overall scoring to 123 points in seven preseason appearances for an average of 17.6 per game.

Also contributing to the McGill offence was Cameron Elliott (9 pts), Zachary Lavoie-Turner (2), Sami Al Uariachi (2) and Nicholas Noble (1), a physical education major, who was making his debut in a McGill uniform after transferring from Concordia.

Leading York's offence was Prince Makunga, a 6-foot-6 point-guard, who notched 16 points, with a 5-for-13 performance in field-goals and 3-for-4 effort in free-throws.

McGill, which had a 36-30 edge in rebounding, shot 45.1 per cent from the field and 32.1 per cent from three-point range.

York was good on 48.3 per cent from the floor and a strong 9-for-12 in free-throws. The Lions (5-3) play again Oct. 12 when they host  Regina (1-0).

McGill, which improved to 3-4 overall, is now 2-0 against Canadian opponents. The team will get a two-week respite before resuming their preseason schedule on Oct. 18 when Brock University (1-0) visits Love Competition Hall at 2 p.m.
