TORONTO --
Jamal Mayali came of the bench and scored a career-high 28 points as visiting McGill toppled Toronto 76-70 in men's preseason basketball at the Goldring Centre, Friday.
It was McGill's unofficial season opener -- excluding a grueling training camp against five NCAA Div. 1 teams in August -- and tit was played in front of partisan group of supporters from family and alumni. The result extended McGill's win streak over Toronto to four
The Varsity Blues held a slim 13-12 lead after the opening quarter but McGill upped the intensity and took a 32-31 advantage into halftime. The Blues wrestled the lead back at 47-46 after three three but McGill then shifted into overdrive, winning the final stanza 30-23.
Mayali, a 6-foot-3, 178-pound guard who was playing before family and friends in his hometown, shot 8-for-15 from the field, including 3-for-7 from three-point range. The 21-year-old political science junior was also a solid 9-for-12 from the free-throw line. Mayali, who saw 26 minutes of playing time, was also credited with seven rebounds, three assists, one blocked shot and a steal.
Two McGill teammates each added a "double-double".
Levi Londole, a junior from LaSalle, Que., tallied 13 points and 10 rebounds, while
Quarry Whyne, a sophomore from Montreal, contributed 11 and 10, respectively.
Third-year guard
Evan Shadkami led the Blues scoring with 24 points.
McGill, which improved to 2-4 overall, is now 1-0 against Canadian opponents, They will conclude their two-game road trip with a contest at York (5-2) on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Tait McKenzie Centre.
U of T is back in action on Sunday as they take on the UQAM Citadins in St. Catherines. Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
